Dr. Joan Wallace, pianist & pedagogue
BIO
Dr. Joan Wallace is a pianist, pedagogue, and collaborative pianist based in the Twin Cities. She completed her doctoral studies in December 2020 at the University of Minnesota under the guidance of Dr. Paul Shaw. Although originally from Michigan, Joan lived abroad for 7 years in the U.K. and in India. She taught piano for 3 years at an international school in North India, where she lived in the foothills of the Himalayas.
After graduating from the Interlochen Arts Academy, she went on to obtain both a B.Mus in Piano and a B.A. in English from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. She subsequently received her M.M. in Piano Pedagogy and Performance from the University of Oklahoma, where she was an assistant to Dr. Jane Magrath.
Dr. Wallace has presented on various pedagogical topics at the MTNA National, State, and Collegiate conferences, as well as the NCKP conference. She has also adjudicated for piano competitions and auditions in both India and the United States.
As a collaborative pianist, she was a fellow in the UNL-Chamber Music Institute and in Hot Springs Music Festival. She has performed in the Haydnsaal of Esterházy Palace in Austria and the Beethoven Institute at Mannes School of Music in New York.
Ms. Wallace has also studied organ, harpsichord, and flute. In addition to piano, she loves traveling the world, birding and nature, and literature of all kinds.
