

Dr. Joan Wallace, pianist & pedagogue

BIO
Dr. Joan Wallace is a pianist, pedagogue, and collaborative pianist based in the Twin Cities. She completed her doctoral studies in December 2020 at the University of Minnesota under the guidance of Dr. Paul Shaw. Although originally from Michigan, Joan lived abroad for 7 years in the U.K. and in India, where she taught piano at an international school in the foothills of the Himalayas.

Dr. Wallace’s students have achieved outstanding success, with many receiving high distinction on the MMTA exams and several selected for the State Honors Recitals, reflecting her dedication to cultivating excellence in piano performance.
​
After graduating from the Interlochen Arts Academy, she earned both a B.Mus in Piano and a B.A. in English from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. She then went on to receive her M.M. in Piano Pedagogy and Performance from the University of Oklahoma, where she was an assistant to Dr. Jane Magrath.
​
Dr. Wallace has presented on various pedagogical topics at the MTNA National, State, and Collegiate conferences, as well as the NCKP conference. She has also adjudicated for piano competitions and auditions in both India and the United States.
​
As a collaborative pianist, she was a fellow in the UNL-Chamber Music Institute and the Hot Springs Music Festival. She has performed in prestigious venues such as the Haydnsaal of Esterházy Palace in Austria and the Beethoven Institute at Mannes School of Music in New York.

In addition to piano, Dr. Wallace has studied organ, harpsichord, and flute. She enjoys traveling the world, birding, nature, and exploring literature of all kinds.
